It might be the case that there’s pet urine or your baby’s urine on the floor that needs cleaning and you want to make sure that your multi-purpose cleaner doesn’t react adversely with urine. Even if you are intentionally mixing these two, we’ll see what will happen then.
What Happens When You Mix Fabuloso with Urine?
Fabuloso can be mixed with urine. Although there are ingredients in Fabuloso that do not react well with some compounds in urine, the compounds in urine aren’t concentrated enough to cause problems.
Fabuloso Ingredients’ Reaction with Urine
Human urine is made up of water, urea, ammonia, creatinine, potassium, sodium, sulfate, and other ions. In addition to these, the urine of animals like dogs also contains carbohydrates, enzymes, fatty acids, magnesium, calcium, etc.
Let’s take a look at how Fabuloso’s ingredients react with them.
1- Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate
This is a surfactant that lowers the tension of a surface so that the cleaner can penetrate and remove the surface. Mixing this with urine won’t cause harm as this isn’t a strong or toxic chemical. It just helps the Fabuloso get rid of the urine faster.
2- Hydrogen Peroxide
Mixing this with urine won’t cause any negative reactions. The strongest compound in urine which is ammonia is often mixed with hydrogen peroxide to bleach hair. So this solution may bleach some of the surfaces you clean but mixing it won’t harm you.
If you want to clean a surface that is stained with human or animal urine, you can rinse it with water first before using Fabuloso on it.
3- Citric acid
There’s no visible reaction when citric acid mixes with the urine.
Ammonia which is in urine is often added to citric acid to increase its pH level. (Source) This helps citric acid to dissolve rust more quickly.
Citric acid also does not react negatively with calcium, magnesium, carbohydrates, and the other ions found in urine.
4- Sodium hydroxide
This chemical increases the hydrolysis of urea, which is a major part of the urine. Over time, urea breaks down and becomes ammonia, which makes stale urine smell so bad. Adding sodium hydroxide to urine helps break the urea in it faster and become ammonia which will cause a pungent odor.
So avoid mixing sodium hydroxide with urine. But in Fabuloso, sodium hydroxide isn’t too concentrated and there are other chemicals that will get rid of the ammonia fast where there is urine.
5- Baking soda
Mixing urine with baking soda may cause some fizzing but it won’t explode or form a toxic acid. This will not aid the effectiveness of the baking soda though.
How to Clean Urine from the Floor Safely?
Cleaning urine stains as soon as possible is the best option. The urine will not have time to break down and smell so bad, which can be very unhealthy because of bacteria. When urine stays too long, it also destroys the floor, especially if it is hardwood.
The two methods explained below work on both fresh and stale urine. They can also be used to clean both animal and human urine.
Method 1: Using Vinegar
This method is best for fresh urine but it can also be used to clean stale urine.
YOU’LL NEED
Vinegar
Dish soap
Water
Bucket
Mop
Essential oil
STEPS
1- Pour some dish soap into a bucket of warm water and add 2 cups of vinegar. The dish soap will clean the dirt and debris off the floor, and the vinegar will get rid of the urine smell and disinfect the surface.
2- Add a few drops of essential oil. This isn’t necessary but some people don’t like the smell of vinegar. This will mask the vinegar smell and further remove the smell of urine. If you are cleaning stale urine, you need essential oil.
3- Mix the solution thoroughly and use a mop to apply it to your floor. If the area stained isn’t large, you can use a towel instead of a mop. Dip a towel into the solution and place it on the stained area.
4- Let the solution sit for about 3 minutes. Whether you applied with a mop or you used a towel, you have to wait for the solution to work. The vinegar breaks down the urine for easy cleaning. During the period of waiting, you’ll notice the urine smells less.
5- Use a damp mop to wipe the solution off the floor. If you used a towel, remove the towel and use a new damp one to wipe the area.
That is all!
Method 2: Using Hydrogen Peroxide
This works well on hardwood floors and gets rid of stale urine smell, no matter how long it’s been.
YOU’LL NEED
Hydrogen peroxide 3%
Baking soda
Dish soap
Gloves
Cloth
STEPS
1- Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide. Add a few drops of dish soap and mix well. Wear gloves and protect your face before doing this.
The hydrogen peroxide will break down the urine, and kill bacteria in the area, while baking soda will get rid of the urine smell.
2- Pour the solution into a spray bottle carefully and spray the stained floor. Test it on a corner of the floor first, to ensure it won’t damage your floor.
3- Let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then wipe it off with a damp cloth.
Instead of making a watery solution and spraying it on the floor, you can make a thick paste with the ingredients. Then smear it on the stained floor. Wipe it off with a damp cloth after about 3 minutes.
Final Thoughts!
Fabuloso shouldn’t be mixed with urine, but if it happens while you are cleaning a urine stain, no harm will come to you.
